A Cigar is made up of 100% tobacco. When a cigar is made, there is nothing else added to the cigar other than tobacco leaves, no fibrous fillers, tar or any other products. A cigar is made up of the different leaves of the tobacco plant and each leaf serves a different purpose inside the cigar. Let's discuss the main parts to a cigar. There are 3 main parts, a wrapper, a binder and a filler along with a cap.
The outer part of the cigar is called the Wrapper. This is where you will get the majority of your flavor. Wrappers will come in different colors ranging from a deep dark brown to a light green, and each color will give a different flavor. The color of the wrapper does not necessarily reflect the strength of the cigar, more so reflects the flavor profile, as in mild or more robust. The strength actually refers to the nicotine content which will mostly come from the filler part of the cigar.
Under the wrapper is what is called the Binder. The binder is a leaf used to hold the filler in place and also helps the wrapper to burn more evenly. The leaves for the binder are stretched and molded to help shape the cigar.
The very center of a cigar is the Filler. The filler is usually comprised of a few different types of leaves, which are grouped together and wrapped up in the binder.
The Cap is the very top of the cigar. The cap is used to cover the top of the cigar giving it a clean look and bring the whole cigar together. This is where you will cut the cigar.
A cigar should be free from mold and holes, and you should always inspect your cigar before you light it up. Do not smoke a cigar that has mold on it, throw it out and keep it away from other cigars.
